Meet Horst, one of our Control Room Operators. Horst sat down with us earlier this month to have a chat about his new role and life in New Zealand, having recently relocated from South Africa with his family. Here are a few of our takeouts:
'Electra was very generous, helping with relocation assistance for my family and I, it set us up for a great start to our new lives in NZ.
'I appreciate the leadership style and management support, you're not micro-managed but left to do your job, with the ability to ask questions and be supported when you need it'.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
The short answer is YES, we do! Every 12-18 months, we hire four Trainees to join our highly-regarded Field Crew.
Once they have been through the full interview process (See answers to our other FAQ), this is what they encounter to become best in class Line Mechanics!
1. Each trainee completes a workplace First Aid certificate.
2. We then enrol them with Connexis for the National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Distribution Line Mechanic) (Level 4). We advertise for people with Level 2 NCEA due to the level 4 requirements. There are calculations as well as written specifications and communication/understanding and interpretation across the literacy spectrum.
3. We then enrol trainees with MITA (our training provider).
4. After that, they attend two, one-week block courses per year for two years, and then a two-week course, six months after the last block.
Our trainees are then qualified. During this time, they work under supervision with a highly-skilled Supervisor and team.
5. During the training time, our trainees must to fill out a Log Book every day. This provides evidence for awarding unit standards.
Before each block course, they have to complete attestations which verify that they have done the practical work to the correct standard for awarding the unit standards.

Our Recruitment Process sees a fair, transparent and communicative approach taken by our hiring managers and HR team. While we aim to adopt a consistent model, from time to time, we do change things around, such as implementing testing for some critical business roles, or when recruiting senior positions, we adopt a panel approach. Our traditional approach looks like the below:
1. Apply online (make sure you fill in ALL details) requested.
2. If you are successful, you'll receive a request for a telephone interview.
3. If shortlisted, you'll be contacted by the HR team to organise a face to face interview (or virtual, depending on your location and the role).
4. Testing / Reference Checks are undertaken depending on the role. We always do two reference checks with your previous managers, but testing is on a case by case basis.
5. Offer is presented verbally.
6. Offer is accepted / start date is negotiated.
7. WELCOME to Electra!
